Storm Team

6/29/2022 (Permalink)

Living in the southeast has incredible benefits; amazing food, amazing scenery, and the
hospitable people on the planet. But with all those great things comes the challenge of strong
storms during the spring and early summer months. In my short 43 years on this earth, I've
see some of the worst. When disaster like that strikes, it's reassuring to know that you have a
company you can call on that is
“Faster To Any Size Disaster”. At SERVPRO, no job is too big and no job is too small. It's
inevitable that disaster will strike, we just never know when. We are a team of dedicated
professionals that are ready 24/7 365 days out of the year. One of the added benefits to a
company like SERVPRO is the way we coordinate with other SERVPRO franchises surrounding us.
You see, we are a team, so when I say no job is too big, I mean that. We can have boots
from other areas on the ground right here in Cullman to help us get your home or business
cleaned up and back in working condition. With a dedicated corporate entity that can supply
us with however much equipment we need, we are truly ready for whatever comes. We love
our community and we don't ever wish disaster on it, but when it DOES strike, we are right
there with you putting the pieces back together.

How our Storm team Travels

6/29/2022 (Permalink)

I can remember my first year working with SERVPRO as if it were yesterday. I was brand new to
the industry. While I was familiar with the SERVPRO brand, I did not know what all that entailed.
Within a short 3 or 4 month span, I was about to see one of the most heart wrenching events
take place, and that was the Nashville flood. I can remember our SERVPRO owner mobilizing
us to connect with the other teams around Nashville to help mitigate all the losses,
commercial and residential. It was surreal riding down the streets of downtown seeing where
water had not receded and downtown blocks still under water. The Cumberland river
wreaked havoc on downtown Nashville and many of the surrounding neighborhoods. In all of
that damage, I got to see the greatest restoration company work together, teaming up
franchises from all parts of the United States to help that community put their lives back
together. That's what you get when SERVPRO assembles for a massive storm event,
cooperation and team work. Although, we don't wish disaster on any community, we are
honored when allowed to serve and help clean up. That couldn't happen if multiple SERVPRO
franchises didn't come together, as a team, to get the job done. So, if a storm does damage
to your area and you see those green fleets come rolling in from all over the United States,
you can rest assured they are a team with the same goal….to get your property back where it
needs to be so you can move forward with your life and business.

number of air movers and dehumidifiers needed in order to dry your structure in a timely
manner. Time is of the essence to prevent secondary damage, so a proper plan is a MUST.
When you contact SERVPRO of Cullman, you can rest assured that every step we take will be

be unsettling enough by itself. Then comes the cleanup. So, how do you know who to trust?
That is where national and local relationships can help. Whether it's your local SERVPRO sales

corporate sales team building bridges with the corporate arms of insurance, know that
SERVPRO works tirelessly to earn the trust of those companies we do work for. We understand
the expectations of these companies when mitigating a loss during a storm. By having built a
foundation of understanding prior to a major event, there is a level of trust that can assure you
that all parties have your best interest at heart. SERVPRO has spent years becoming a

know that we, along with your insurance company, are committed to doing what needs to be
done to get you back on your feet.

6/15/2022 (Permalink)

Sunny weather is the best time to spruce up your commercial property. Let’s go over a few maintenance tips that can help your Cullman or Blount county property.

  1. Gutters and Downspouts – sticks, leaves and debris can build up in the tracks of your gutters and clog downspouts over the fall and winter months, which could lead to water intrusion. Water intrusion could lead to water damage, mold, or deterioration of building materials.
  2. Roof Inspection – getting your roof inspected once a year is one of the best ways to prevent roof leaks. If you notice loose tiles, shingles, or hail damage, contact a roofing company to address any issues.
  3. Exterior Washing – the wet summer weather can bring in dirt and moss to the exterior of your building. With a pressure washer, you can easily remove, dirt, dust, grime, moss and the like from walls, fences, parking lots, driveways and sidewalks to maintain the outside of your property.
  4. Fresh Coat of Paint – New paint can provide a new protective layer to your structure. helping to fight against the risk of potential damages from outside forces.
  5. Clean up vegetation around the building – the summer months bring high heat and dry conditions which can increase the chances of fire. Trim or remove vegetation that has dried up to help reduce the risk of fire spreading to the building.

Busted Pipes in A Commercial Building

6/15/2022 (Permalink)

Busted pipes can wreak havoc and spell disaster in a commercial building. It is important to have to protocols in place to get the water turned off and cleaned up as quickly as possible.

The #1 priority when a pipe burst, is to get the water turned off ASAP. After the supply has been turned off, open up every faucet to drain the remaining water from the lines. Also turn off the water the heater and flush every toilet at least one time. Once these objectives have been completed, the next phase can begin.

Step #2 is to reduce secondary damage. This is done by getting the water removed from the structure in a timely manner. Water will continue to move through building materials as long as it is present. If there is any doubt that water ran through an area that contains electricity, turn off the power at the breakers and consult an electrician to perform an inspection.

Step #3 is to contact a certified mitigation specialist such as SERVPRO. Even though you may have removed the standing water, there will still be elevated moisture levels and humidity. It is crucial to make sure that moisture levels and humidity are returned to preloss levels to reduce the risk of mold forming.

Should busted pipes cause water to infiltrate your building, call SERVPRO today to let us help you get your business back in working order.

24 Hour Response is Very Important

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

As an insurance adjuster in Cullman/Blount Counties, you are part of the front line for residential and commercial disasters. Some events, like those involving water, require an immediate response to slow or stop the course of damage. SERVPRO has a 24-hour response because they understand that every hour of exposure has a crucial impact on the extent of damage, and cost, since the chance of restoration goes down as the clock ticks away. Here is the typical progression of water damage:

First 24 Hours

  • Porous items such as drywall, upholstery, carpets and floors begin to absorb the water immediately.
  • Stains from finishes and pigments may occur from contact between items.
  • Documents and photos absorb water and warp.
  • Materials become saturated with water and begin to break down or crack from swelling.
  • Metal begins to tarnish.
  • Molds begin to grow.

After 24 Hours

  • Wood studs, flooring, windows and doors warp.
  • Paint bubbles and peels.
  • Metal corrodes.
  • Mold and mildew multiply.
  • Sitting water becomes “black water” due to exposure.

To minimize costs and damage, a 24-hour response is critical. As an insurance adjuster, you know that damage increases dramatically in a matter of hours and the costs increase exponentially during that time.

How a 24 Hour Response Is Possible

With the power of a national company, SERVPRO is always open. The national call center at our corporate office operates every day of the year, 24 hours a day. With this first contact being important, your customer will talk to a professional on the phone within the first hour and, thanks to the power of local reach, on-site work will be able to begin within four hours of that initial call. As an adjuster, you will receive your first verbal briefing within eight hours.

Selecting a national vendor with more than 1,700 locations ensures a 24-hour response for your customers. You also know you can count on consistent standards and procedures, and big company quality. The fast response is why they are the preferred vendor for many national insurance companies.

Cigarette Odors Can Linger

3/17/2022 (Permalink)

Has your home in Cullman or Blount counties suffered a cigarette fire? Besides the actual damages, trying to get rid of the smell of smoke out is a nightmare. There are some tips that aid in this process.

1. Charcoal and White Vinegar
This method is by far the cheapest of many options as both charcoal and white vinegar are easy to come by from any local store. By keeping open containers of either charcoal or white vinegar in your home, the cigarette smell is slowly absorbed out of the air. Keep in mind that this method only works for milder pockets of odor, so you might need something more heavy-duty if you've suffered a large ashtray fire.

2. Air Filters
If the solution above isn't as fast or as effective as you would want, you might try a different air filter. Since you're dealing with a very complex pollutant composed of many particles and gases of varying sizes, the best option is a HEPA filter. There are different ratings of filters based on what size particle you want to filter. Each filter is rated on a scale of 1 to 20 called a MERV rating. This tells you what size particle a filter effectively removes from the air. The higher the rating, the smaller particles it is capable of filtering. With a cigarette fire or odor, you should use a filter with a MERV rating of 18 or higher.

3. Contact a Professional
If these DIY tips aren't solving your issue, it's time to contact a fire and odor removal specialist. These experts come with equipment that's designed exactly for this job, and they know how to use it with efficiency. One piece of tech many pros use is a hydroxyl generator. This device produces a harmless charged variant of water particles to break up odor molecules. This helps deal with the smell, and more advanced filters are used to deal with the pollutants.

Safety Plans are a Necessity!

2/24/2022 (Permalink)

Commercial buildings, which include offices, restaurants, shops, and anything retail related or a place that brings in income, have a large number of employees of customers in them every day.  The importance of Safety Plans in case of emergencies in these types of facilities can save lives.

Safety Plans are put in place in case of emergencies and natural disasters. Without a safety plan, many things can and will go wrong.  With a safety plan, you and your entire company will know what to do, who to call, and how to handle anything thrown at them.  A company becomes a much safer company when a safety plan is put in measure.

For instance, worker safety is crucial when operating a business.  With a Safety Plan and by executing such plan, employees are in much safer working conditions and less likely to have an injuring or fatal accident.  If an incident does happen however, the Safety Plan will have an exact protocol to follow to insure everything is handled in the most proper and efficient way possible.

A Safety Plan will also contain protocols to follow in case of natural disasters.  A solid Safety Plan will have an evacuation route map, all of the available exits listed, and a step by step what-to-do under certain events.  These events may include a fire, tornado, hurricane, flood or other such disaster.

Here at SERVPRO of Cullman/Blount Counties, we have a detailed Safety Plan that is followed and protocols executed daily when using equipment. We value safety of not only our employees but our clients also.

It's Busted Pipes Season in Cullman and Blount Counties

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Pipe Burst

For our area, February is where many residents experience frozen pipes. While freezing temperatures are not year round (thank goodness), it's important to know what to expect when they do occur. If temperatures drop and you happen to encounter a leak in your house, it could be due to a variety of factors:

  • An improperly connected appliance.
  • Clogged Drain
  • Broken sink, bathtub, toilet, washing machine, or dishwasher.
  • A clog in a drain.
  • Or a broken pipe

A broken pipe can cause a big amount of damage to your home or business. In particular, the most amount of damage occurs when you don't know where the break is or if you don't have direct access to the water break.

Broken pipes occur for a variety of reasons: freezing, corrosion, water pressure.

Freezing

With colder weather, extreme temperatures can cause pipes to expand and break. Once the ice melts, the water can flood your home. It's important to note that pipes can freeze when they are exposed to temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. In particular, the pipes that are most prone to freezing are found in unfinished basements and in attics during the colder months.

Corrosion

Older pipes break down with age, and require a trained professional in order to replace pipes. If ignored, it can cause an enormous amount of flooding. It's best to have a professional like SERVPRO of Cullman/Blount Counties to come inspect your pipes if they are older and may need replacing.

Water Pressure

High pressure can cause the pipes in your home to break. Water is transported from a water company supply line to the house, needing to pass through a pressure regulator. If the regulator is faulty, it can cause the water pressure to rise exponentially. If the pressure gets high enough it can lead to a pipe breaking in your home.

Why Us?

SERVPRO of Cullman/Blount Counties is an expert in resolving water damage. If a pipe breaks, we are there to help you clean up the water and damage as well as properly dry out your home. Our highly trained technicians are able to help you locate the source of the water, and clean up the damage from where it started. We take extra care to ensure that there is no moisture left in your surfaces. If a broken pipe ever occurs on your property, make sure that you give us a call and we will be right there!

Refrigerators and Water Damages

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

The common cause for these water leaks is the plastic water line behind the refrigerator will crack, a slow drip begins and water pools behind the fridge unnoticed. Another common cause is excess condensation buildup which has the same effect. Water damage from your fridge can cause numerous problems in your home especially since the problem can go unnoticed for so long, at this point the damage has already taken a toll on your floors and surrounding areas. Moisture and heat in the dark environment create perfect conditions for mold to form and your floorboards to rot. Somewhere like an apartment or enclosed area these mold spores can cause issues and a problem like this should not be overlooked. Our trained technicians we are experts in mold remediation and will gladly remove and prevent further frustrations for you.

So now what?

It is important to first clean up any visible water to avoid further damage and possibilities of mold occurring. Once this is done you should inspect your fridge and see if there are any noticeable leaks or areas where condensation may be forming to excess. It is important to replace any faulty connections to stop the immediate leak if possible. If you are able to, assess the damage done to the area under and around the fridge. Most of the time floorboards will show visible damage, but the real problems can occur underneath where you cannot see. We recommend you give us a call at SERVPRO of Cullman/Blount Counties where we are available 24/7 to assist. We will send a team out to stop any further damage and help prevent this issue from occurring again. While you may be able to swap out the damaged areas of flooring, mold can continue to grow and cause more problems in the future. With many years of experience we will make the cleanup a quick and easy experience.

Pro tip: add a water alarm behind/under your fridge to catch any further problems!

Managing Mold In Your Property

1/25/2022 (Permalink)

When there’s water coming in from a roof leak or leaking water line, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business. Mold can cause many different health effects and can also cause significant damage to your property.  SERVPRO of Cullman/Blount Counties has the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem. Although every mold damage scenario is different requiring a unique solution, the general mold remediation process stays the same. The following steps illustrate a “typical” mold removal process.

Call the Green Team

The mold cleanup and restoration process in your home or business begins when you call us. A representative will ask a series of questions to help determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel needed.

Inspection and Damage Assessment

Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using technology designed to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold and water can hide in plain sight.

Containment

Various containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold and isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.

Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. Antifungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminate mold colonies and help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold infested porous materials, like drywall and flooring, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.

Restoration

Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may have to be removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business. We understand mold and mold growth and have the training and equipment to remediate mold in your home or business.

Building Materials and Water Don't Mix

12/28/2021 (Permalink)

When water fills your home in the Cullman or Blount county area, it can be hard to know what's going to happen next. You may have a lot of questions, such as the following:

  • How long will the restoration take?
  • What furnishings will have to be replaced?
  • Will your home ever be the same again?
  • Can you salvage your flooring even if there's swelling wood?

When you work with a residential restoration team, you can get easy answers to your toughest questions. These experts will even help you figure out what will happen to your building materials.

Fixtures

Swelling wood is rarely a good sign. If your cabinets were damaged in a flood, you will have to replace them if there is swollen wood. Other fixtures, such as toilets, sinks and faucets, will likely be okay to reuse after a water damage. Most of the fixtures will have to be inspected to determine whether they should be thrown away or kept.

Flooring

Not all flooring can survive a water damage event. Some real wood floors can be dried and saved even after they are damaged by water. Carpets, subfloor and carpet padding, however, may need to be replaced if the damage is too bad.

Walls

Even the walls and ceilings in your home may be affected by water. During a water pipe repair, drywall may have to be stripped away to get at the leaking plumbing. If your drywall is damaged during a pipe burst, there is a chance it can be dried out and salvaged. However, the insulation behind it will have to be replaced if it got wet. If you do have to replace drywall, you typically only have to replace the portions that got wet during the high waters.

Not all water damage cases are the same. If you notice warping or swelling wood, you may have to replace a building material even if it can normally be saved.

Fire Extinguishers

12/22/2021 (Permalink)

As handy as fire extinguisher canisters can be in your home or business for small flare-ups, this suppression system gets designed to put out flames quickly and not to limit the mess that it can make. Often homeowners find that putting out a small fire causes more damage and need for cleanup than the fire itself did. Our professionals can help with all stages of fire recovery from debris removal to cleaning up the residue that extinguishing foam can leave on structural elements and contents of your property.

A fire can stay contained to a small area when you utilize fire extinguishers quickly in your home. The suppression chemicals inside these canisters get designed to smother the fire before it can get out of control, but this protection does not come without a need for extensive cleanup and evaluation of structural integrity. Our SERVPRO Franchise professionals respond to your fire emergency can assess the full scope of the damage and determine the restorative actions that your property requires to return to pre-fire condition.

Cleanup of residue from the extinguisher happens both through conventional cleaning approaches with wet and dry sponges on accessible surfaces, but also requires specialized equipment designed to reach inaccessible areas more easily. It is our focus to provide efficient and effective fire damage cleanup so that you can return to normal life seamlessly.

Carpeted areas often require focused attention as well when cleaning up extinguisher residue. If the carpet has managed to come through the fire unscathed, it still requires our premier cleaning services including steam vacuuming and dry cleaning to pull the chemical residue and any soot or smoke particulates from the fibers of the flooring.

Heating Costs Are On The Rise

12/13/2021 (Permalink)

Heating and energy costs can quickly add up and affect (sometimes even ruin) your monthly budget. To save a few dollars and to not waste any energy, you can set thermostats at 68° when you are home and at nighttime. If you are not going to be home for most of the day you can turn it down farther to 65-66° for additional savings.

Energy costs and monthly bills can be an annoying part of our lives, but by making small changes you will start to see that you will be able to save money.

When customers experience water losses, one of the first things we do is set up equipment to start the drying process. This is great news, because its the quickest way to get your home or business back to preloss conditions, but not so great for your power bill. We encourage and tell our customers to look at their past years' bill for the same time period and submit those to their insurance carrier for potential reimbursement. If water or fire damage should affect your home or business make sure to call the team with 21+ years of experience in the community!

Winter Can Bring Good and Bad Times

12/2/2021 (Permalink)

Hot chocolate. Warm blankets. Snow angels. Holiday decorations. Christmas movies. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas … and winter. Which means the cooler weather is starting to move in. 11/15/2021 (Permalink)

We are fast approaching Thanksgiving. It's that time of the year again where family and friends come together for a delicious meal.. There are several ways to cook a turkey, but a favorite among some is deep fried. Unfortunately, we have all seen the videos that end in a fiery ball of poultry. If you plan on deep frying a turkey this year, follow these tips to keep you and your family safe!

  • Thaw and dry turkey completely before cooking
    • Thaw the turkey in the refrigerator approximately 24 hours for every 5 pounds, according to The National Turkey Federation
    • Ice or water that mixes can cause flare-ups
  • Fryer Setup
    • Use fryer OUTDOORS and away from decks, garages, homes, and other structures.
    • Keep children and pets away from the fryer.
    • Use on a flat surface to avoid accidental tipping. Make sure the tank and burner are at least 2+ feet apart.
  • Measure the Oil
    • Avoid overfilling by reading the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Be Prepared
    • Use oven mitts to protect hands and/or arms.

The Holidays Are Here: Kitchen Fires Are Preventable!

11/9/2021 (Permalink)

While fire remediation companies are available to help you rebuild your home, the preferable option is likely to avoid a fire. While wishful thinking will not always prevent a disaster from happening, when it comes to kitchen fires, you can follow four tips to limit the possibility of a grease fire.

  1. Stay alert
  2. Remain present
  3. Use a timer
  4. Remove flammable items

Stay Alert

Kitchen fires and damage often occur because someone lets their guard down while cooking. It is easy to become distracted, especially when dealing with complicated recipes that involve long periods of cooking. However, it is vital that you stay alert. Therefore, if you are drowsy or have had a few drinks, then it might be a good idea to hold off making that fancy meal.

Remain Present

When it comes to kitchen fire prevention tips, the best one is to remain present. Do not leave the kitchen when you have things frying/cooking on the stove. If you must leave, then find someone willing and able to watch it for you while you are away. Kitchen fires can happen in an instant, and they require quick responses to limit any damage.

Use a Timer

If no one is home and you have to leave the kitchen, set a timer. It is easy to become distracted with other things. A timer will bring your attention back to the kitchen.

Remove Flammable Items

Before cooking anything on the stovetop, make sure that you remove any potentially flammable items. For example, move cloth oven mitts and any boxed or plastic objects. You need the workspace to be clear of any fire risks.
The four tips above will help to reduce your risks of a kitchen fire. However, keep in mind that fire is dangerous, and if something your cooking does ignite and you can't extinguish it, get to safety and call 911.

Heat Your Space...But Be Safe!

11/1/2021 (Permalink)

Cooler temperatures are making there way into our area. Space heaters are a practical and affordable solution to adding to your home heat supply during the cold weather months provided all the necessary safety precautions are observed. Space heaters are responsible for approximately 40% of home fires.

  • Look for a space heater with a protective guard around the heating element to help prevent accidental harm to small children and pets.
  • Don’t consider purchasing a space heater unless it bears the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) or similar symbol on the package. That’s your assurance that the product conforms to established safety standards.
  • Choose a space heater that is right-sized for the room or area where you intend to use it. If the heater is too small for the job, it will work harder than it should have to.  That, in turn, can lead to premature failure, overheating, and potentially even a fire.
  • Only those who understand all aspects of your space heater functions should be allowed to operate it.
  • While we don’t recommend purchasing a fuel-burning space heater, if that’s your model of choice, just be sure the area around it is properly vented to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Since most space heaters heat people and objects, and not space, never leave it on when going to bed or leaving the room for more than a minute or two.

If your home or business has been affected by smoke or fire damage please give us a call, we are here to help. SERVPRO of Cullman/Blount Counties is trained in smoke and fire remediation.

Roof Damages Can Be Costly

11/1/2021 (Permalink)

The roofs that we take shelter under signify a protective layer from the environment and outside forces as well as an indicator of our personal safe place.

Even though a roof represents one of the largest investments in our home, most homeowners do not maintain it as attentively as they would other belongings or parts of the home. When keeping up the necessary work your roof needs is laid to the sidelines, it can create damage inside the home, not just the exterior.

Roof maintenance needs to be recognized as a priority. On an annual basis for every homeowner and especially for those of us that live in climate with very clear definitions of all of the seasons.

  • In winter, your roof is exposed to the cold not only for the temperature, but the winds, rain and potentially snow. Which creates a situation of it to contract.
  • Humidity and higher temperatures during the summer can have the opposite effect making the roof components swell, creating further strain on its integrity.
  • When there is a constant back and forth of dry spells to alternating rainy spurts, this can speed up and shorten the lifespan of the roof.

When a roof begins to fail there can be very obvious leaks from the ceiling or in the attic space. What can be scarier, is the leak that is undiscovered. Which usually is a result of a piercing; possibly from a tree branch, a weakness in a seam, or parts of the shingles that have been worn down because of the elements. Causing moisture or even straight water itself to find its way into the spaces between the ceiling and walls and start affecting the structure of your building.

By the time the issue is found, extensive damage may have already occurred. This can also create an environment for mold to grow and spread, which can now affect anyone’s health who inhabits the building.

We hope that every home owner realizes not only the investment that a roof is, but that it also comes with needed maintenance to protect themselves, their belongings and entire home as a whole.

September is National Preparedness Month

9/9/2021 (Permalink)

September is National Preparedness Month. This is recognized each September to promote family and community disaster planning now and throughout the year. The 2021 theme is “Prepare to Protect. Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love.”

The first week of September is all about “Making a Plan”. Make sure to talk to your friends and family about how you will communicate before, during and after a disaster situation.

The second week of September is all about “Building a Kit”. Buy supplies that will last several days after a disaster for everyone living in your home. Don’t forget to consider the unique needs of each person or pet may have in the event that you have to evacuate quickly.

The third week of September focuses on “Low-Cost, No-Cost Preparedness”. It is important to know the risk of disasters in your area and check over your insurance coverage. Learn how to make your home or business stronger in the face of storms and other common hazards and act fast if you receive a local warning or alert.

The last week of September is about “Teaching Youth About Preparedness”. Talk to your kids about preparing for emergencies and what to do in case you are separated. Reassure them by providing information about how they can get involved.

Disasters Don’t Wait. Make Your Plan Today.

As Summer Comes To An End, Keep Fire Safety In Mind

8/18/2021 (Permalink)

Summer is starting to slowly wind down, and school is about to start for many students. While you're getting those last minute BBQ parties in, there are several safety tips to keep in mind.

According to a recent study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly 11,900 Americans were injured by fireworks in 2015, with the majority happening in the month surrounding the Fourth of July. Another 8,700 are injured by charcoal/wood-burning and propane grill fires. A grill should always be supervised when in use. Keep children and pets a safe distance from the grilling area to prevent accidental burns or tipping of the grill.

Grills also cause an average of 8,900 home structure or outdoor fires. "These fires caused an annual average of 50 civilian injuries and $2 million in direct property damage," according to the National Protection Association (NFPA).

Summer is a time to enjoy the great outdoors, but it is also important to keep safety in mind. Consider the following tips, provided by the National Fire Protection Association, to keep you and your family safe all summer long.

  • When using a charcoal grill, only use starter fluids designed for barbecue grills; do not add fluid after coals have been lit.
  • When using a gas grill, ensure the hose connection is tight; check hoses for leaks. Applying soapy water to the hoses will easily and safely reveal any leaks.
  • When camping, always use a flame-retardant tent and set up camp far away from the campfire.
  • Always build a campfire downwind from the tent area. Clear vegetation and dig a pit before building your fire. Extinguish the fire before going to sleep or leaving the campsite.
  • Store liquid fire starter (not gasoline) away from your tent and campfire and only use dry kindling to freshen a campfire.

If you enjoy lounging by the pool or going for a boat ride to cool off for the summer sun, make sure you exercise caution, especially when children are present. Only swim in approved areas and supervise children at all times when near the water.

Good Shutters Can Protect Your Home During A Storm

8/17/2021 (Permalink)

When it comes to protecting your home or business, from damaging winds, there are many things to consider. If you want to add storm shutters to your home, it can be overwhelming to review the numerous types. While there is no one-size-fits-all solution for protecting your home, learning the basics can help you choose wisely. Here are some of the options you may consider:

  • Accordion
  • Bahama
  • Colonial
  • Fabric
  • Plywood
  • Rolling

Permanent Fixtures

If you live in an area with frequent storms and severe weather, you may consider adding permanent storm shutters to your home. Permanent mounts add protection and aesthetic flair to your home. You can choose from accordion, Bahama, Colonial, or rolling shutters, all of which provide both storm protection and an element of design. Prices and styles vary within each category. Manually-operated accordion-style options generally cost $15-$25 per square foot of window area, while rolling shutters, generally made of high-quality metal or polycarbonate, will cost approximately $20-$30 per square foot of window area. Bahama-style awnings protect your home against the sun and high winds alike and are sold in standard window sizes for $15-$20 per square foot. Colonial-style varieties offer the most diversity as they come in numerous materials and are sold in sets for $200-$500 per window.

Temporary Fixtures

Though temporary fixtures may be less visually appealing, they are equally functional for storm protection. Fabric storm panels, made of PVC or mesh, are a budget-friendly choice that generally costs $75-$300 depending on the size of your windows. A sturdier and more protective option is plywood. Though less pleasing to look at, plywood costs only $1 per square foot and is an effective temporary way to protect your home from intense storms.

Preparation is important when you're facing tornadoes and high winds. When the storm passes, know who to call for help with clean up and restoration to get your home back to a clean and safe state.

Don't Forget About Dryer Vents!

8/17/2021 (Permalink)

Dryers come equipped with a lint trap to catch and collect the lint and tiny threads that come off of clothing when residents in Fort Collins do their laundry. Over time, larger items, such as broken zippers, can wear tiny holes into the trap. These holes can permit lint to pass through the trap and into the duct. When clogs develop in the interior of the duct, heat can build up and result in a fire.

When a home suffers a fire damage because of a clogged duct or exterior vent, fire damage can occur. This is not the only way that a fire can occur, though, and clothing that ignites while in the dryer causes almost as many fires. Our technicians can help you undo the damage and restore your home.

Just like we remove charred materials like burnt drywall sections, wooden trim, and destroyed personal belongings, we also remove and replace ducts and vents. SERVPRO helps homeowners prevent such fires by cleaning out ductwork and all related vents. A fire can start in other ducts, unrelated to the dryer, and we can reduce the risk in these areas, also.

Cleaning up and removing any destroyed materials makes it much easier for repair work to happen. Doing so also removes any dangers present that could harm you or your children. Pets can also end up injured when they wander into areas that contain fire damage. A fire, no matter how small, can cause a family to experience enough stress without the added crisis of an injury.

Sorting through the laundry, both unwashed and already laundered, reveals which items suffer from fire-related defects. We can often remove smoke damage on unique or one-of-a-kind clothing items. The fire's heat can also cause other problems to items in the immediate area. Drying racks and shelves can become unsightly messes, but the small endeavor of installing new ones can help make everything "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO of Cullman/Blount Counties serves the residents of our beautiful city and the surrounding areas when any fire damage adversely affects a home.

Standing Water? We Can Help.

8/4/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage is an emergency and saving time is very important. Contact our restoration specialists to identify all areas that have water and moisture issues. Our team can help you avoid severe secondary damage in your Cullman or Blount county home.

What are the necessary precautions to take after water damage?

As you wait for SERVPRO to perform the needed mitigation services, you should take some necessary precautions. Begin by stopping the leak by turning off the main shut off valve. Another safety concern is the electronic equipment. If water has risen to the electrical outlets, switch off the power source. After turning off the power source, unplug all electrical equipment. Unplugging the equipment quickly increases the chances of saving it. You should also wear protective clothing and rubber gloves if you choose to remove waterlogged items from your home.

How do certified technicians handle water loss incidents?

Our technicians usually remove the ruined materials that can either be discarded or restored. These materials may include carpeting, baseboards, furniture, insulation, carpet padding, drywall, fragile woods and upholstery. After removing the ruined materials, our crew can start removing the water using wet/dry vacuums or portable pumps. We can then use specialized equipment such as axial air movers and Low Grain Refrigerant (LGR) dehumidifiers to dry the affected areas. We also handle mold damage during the restoration process. We disinfect mold-infested surfaces and restore them as fast as possible to keep the mold from spreading.

How long does a typical home take to dry?

Several factors determine the amount of time it takes a house to dry. They include:

  • Humidity
  • Temperature
  • How fast emergency services start
  • Type of affected materials
  • Amount of saturation

Our SERVPRO team manipulates the relative humidity and temperature to dry a home faster. We monitor and evaluate the drying process consistently to determine when drying is complete. We use equipment like moisture meters, moisture sensors and infrared cameras to monitor the drying process. It is time-consuming to inspect for moisture. Infrared cameras enable us to check large areas of a house more quickly. Even though there are no rules to determine how long a home can take to dry, a typical water loss takes 3 to 5 days to dry.

Should I turn off the drying equipment at night?

No, the drying equipment should remain running on a 24-hour basis. The more hours the equipment remains on, the faster buildings dry. We place the equipment strategically to encourage optimal drying.
